ZAPATISTAS – ATTACKS AND RESISTANCE…… A first hand report of the latest events in Chiapas, Mexico
With slides showing the visit of the solidarity caravan to the Zapatista centre of La Realidad in the Lacandona Jungle
Tuesday 22nd July at the Autonomous Centre of Edinburgh (ACE), 17 West Montgomery Place, EH7 5HA
Doors open 7pm for 7.30pm start.
An activist recently returned from Chiapas will give a short talk and show slides about her recent participation in the Solidarity Caravan to the Zapatista centre of La Realidad in the Lacandona Jungle. The caravan followed the murder of the Zapatista Galeano and the attack on the autonomous school and clinic at La Realidad by paramilitaries on 2nd May 2014.
The visit of the caravan was also the occasion for Zapatista Subcomandante Marcos to give his speech declaring that he would no longer be the spokesman for the Zapatistas. Our speaker will discuss what this means in the context of the continuing Zapatista struggle for autonomy – the Zapatistas have created autonomous schools, health clinics and decision-making structures independent of the state.

AN ATTACK ON THE ZAPATISTAS IS AN ATTACK ON US ALL
A CALL TO ACTION IN SUPPORT OF THE ZAPATISTAS
SUMMARY OF RECENT EVENTS:
On May 2, 2014, in the Zapatista territory of La Realidad, Chiapas, Mexico, the group CIOAC-Historico [with the participation of the Green
Ecological Party and the National Action Party (PAN)], planned and executed a paramilitary attack on unarmed Zapatista civilians. An autonomous Zapatista school and clinic was destroyed, 15 people were ambushed and injured and Jose Luis Solis Lopez (Galeano), teacher at the Zapatista Little School, was murdered. The mainstream media is falsely reporting this attack on the Zapatistas as an intra-community confrontation, but in fact this attack is the result of a long-term counterinsurgency strategy promoted by the Mexican government.
Given the experience of the 1997 massacre at Acteal, when 45 indigenous people were murdered by government-backed paramilitaries, we are concerned about the mounting paramilitary activity against Zapatista bases of support. It is clear that if we do not take action now, the current situation in Chiapas may also lead to an even more tragic end.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO US:
Since 1994, the Zapatistas have shown us the bankruptcy of the world that dominates us and, most importantly, the ability to organize ourselves into self-determining communities autonomous from the political class and capitalism. It is this capacity to show that another world is possible in the here and now, one not rooted in exploitation, dispossession, repression and de-valorization, but rather in liberty, democracy and justice, that has inspired us all. An attack on the Zapatistas is an attack on the other world that we have all tried to build along with them for the past 20 years.
WHAT WE SHOULD DO:
We strongly denounce the murder of Compañero Galeano and the attacks against our Zapatista brothers and sisters. We denounce the deliberate destruction of the Zapatista clinic and school. We denounce the disinformation from the press regarding these attacks.

SOLIDARITY AND RESISTANCE
From 18 – 24 May solidarity actions with the Zapatistas were organised round the world.
In Chiapas itself an 800-strong solidarity caravan travelled the tortuous trail from San Cristobal deep into the Lacandona Jungle. There the activists from the civil society joined with 2,200 Zapatistas, to pay homage to the murdered Zapatista Galeano, in an impressive gathering in La Realidad on 24th May.
Solidarity continues, for example with the fundraising efforts to rebuild the school and clinic in La Realidad. And the Zapatistas themselves are taking the struggle forward, undaunted, with a meeting of the National Indigenous Congress, involving other indigenous groups from round Mexico, coming up soon at La Realidad.
