The incompetence of the authorities is keeping the indigenous Tzeltales from the community of El Bosque in forced displacement in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas. They are mostly women and infants who face problems with regard to food and health.
The Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Human Rights Centre (Frayba) has received information about the forced displacement of 300 people, indigenous Tzeltales from the community of El Bosque, municipality of San Cristobal de Las Casas. The incident occurred on 19th February, when a group of people from the community of Yashtinin, in the same municipality, threatened to kill and burn the homes of the families, in a dispute over land, and the cutting of trees. The authorities have taken no action.
The indigenous are now displaced in one of the mountains of the region. They are afraid to return home due to death threats and threats of attack. They are living under plastic sheets, exposed to the cold, and many of them are sick. They have no drinking water and very little food.
