Mexico Human Rights Update
The UN High Commissioner on Human Rights Visits Mexico – In preparation for the Mexico visit of Zeid Ra’ad Al-Hussein, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, a group of human rights experts from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) visited Mexico between September 28 and October 2 and issued a report critical of the country’s human rights situation. The Mexican government reacted strongly, denying its responsibility for human rights violations and discrediting the IACHR’s Executive Secretary, Emilio Alvarez Icaza, who is Mexican. Some of you may remember him from his participation in Javier Sicilia’s Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity. Luis Hernández Navarro described the government’s behavior in Time to tell the truth.
The UN High Commissioner met with President Peña Nieto on October 7 and gave a press conference in which he stated his assessment of Mexico’s human rights situation. TeleSur published a report that included an estimate of 150,000 deaths from 2006 to present and makes clear that the international human rights organisms are focusing their attention on Mexico.
