Happy Holidays from Chiapas Support Committee

Home of the Compañero Manuel blog on the Zapatistas & Mexico

It’s that time of year when we ask for your radical generosity to support our work on behalf of autonomous education projects in Zapatista communities. Please read our annual appeal letter here
and make a donation according to your ability. You can also mail a donation to the P O Box at the bottom of this email. We thank you for your support during 2017 and we’re looking forward to a very interesting 2018: Marichuy’s campaign and the presidential elections in Mexico, the Chiapas Support Committee’s 20th anniversary and, at the end of the year, the EZLN will celebrate it’s 25th anniversary! We wish all of you a happy, healthy and safe holiday season!

Zapatista News & Analysis

A human tragedy has been unfolding in the Chiapas Highlands for several months. “Armed civilian groups,” aka paramilitaries, have driven somewhere between 6,000 to 7,000 people from their homes, most of them from the municipality of Chalchihuitán, due to a long-standing border dispute with the neighbor municipality of Chenalhó. While we have not seen any reports of Zapatista or CNI (National Indigenous Congress) communities affected, 11 people have died and Chenalhó is the municipality where both Acteal and Polhó are located. It is of the utmost concern that the same paramilitaries that committed the Acteal Massacre have re-armed and re-activated! We’ll have a news summary out soon and meanwhile you can follow news about this on our Compañero Manuel blog and our Facebook page. The first news about this situation is below.

!. 7,000 displaced due to violence in Chiapas – The Fray Bartolome de las Casas Human Rights Center (Frayba Center) warns that another massacre like the one that occurred 20 years ago in Acteal could happen again because the paramilitaries have been reactivated in Chenalhó and are attacking Chalchihuitán residents over a border dispute. The attacks have affected 7,000 residents of the 2 municipalities.
