1. SAVE THE DATES: Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8, 2020 – ENCUENTRO: IN, AGAINST, AND BEYOND THE CAPITALIST HYDRAYou are invited to a Gathering (Encuentro) of the Sexta Grietas del Norte Network, a national network of adherents to the EZLN’s Sixth Declaration of the Lacandón Jungle. We’re also inviting folks who are interested in becoming adherents and joining one of the member collectives. The 2 days will consist of workshops and a celebration of International Women’s Day, as proposed by the Zapatista Women. The Chiapas Support Committee is hosting the Ecuentro/Gathering. It will be held at the Omni Commons, 4799 Shattuck Ave., Oakland, CA. Food will be provided, so we’re asking folks to register here. We could also use some help with this large gathering. Send us an email if you are available to volunteer.

1. The EZLN inaugurates new government centers– The government centers that were inaugurated are: Caracol 8 “The light that shines on the world,” in Dolores Hidalgo community; and Caracol 10 “Flowering the Rebel Seed,” in Patria Nueva community, both in the [official] municipality of Ocosingo. News reports indicate that Subcomandante Galeano (formerly Marcos) attended the inauguration celebrations that took place the first weekend in February. Congratulations to the new Caracoles!

2. The Chiapas Congress endorses the Pijijiapan-Palenque Highway Axis Project– This project, financed almost entirely through private investment, envisions connecting the town of Pijijiapan near the Pacific Ocean first with the state capital of Tuxtla Gutierrez, then with the existing Tuxtla-San Cristóbal Highway (a toll road) and then with a still-to-be-constructed third section from San Cristóbal to Palenque. The latter section is now being called the “Highway of Cultures.” It was formerly called the San Cristóbal-Palenque Highway and is widely opposed by residents of the region.

3. They denounce the presence of US agents at Mexico’s Southern BorderPeoples Without Borders (Pueblos Sin Fronteras, PSF), a migrant rights defense organization, denounced the presence at Mexico’s southern border of agents from the US Department of Homeland Security coordinating the persecution and hunting of migrants jointly with Mexico’s National Guard and immigration police.

4. United Nations-HR says: Maya Train consultation deficient – The Mexico Office of the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights (UN-HR) expressed concerns about the Mexican government’s “consulta” on the Maya Train. Specifically, the UN-HR was very concerned about very low voter turnout, the lack of information about negative impacts of the train and the concern that people from the communities expressed their agreement with the project as a means of receiving attention to basic needs like water, health, education, jobs, housing, a healthy environment, etcetera.
